I approached this goal with 2 goals in mind:
I wanted to shape the direction of the light, and I wanted to create a geometric shape.
I first experimented with complex grids that were a dense mix of folds. I moved onto simpler shapes once seeing the appeal of more defined silhouettes.
I eventually settled on a 2x7 grid of squares with the folding pattern shown on the three right-most forms.
Articulation in the lamp involved a string pulley system with a 3D printed skeleton to support the paper, which was pretty flimsy at its final scale of 70 in x 20 in. Everything was sewn together.
The only glue used was to close the ends of the lantern.
